EIGHT OUT OF TEN CARDIAC ARRESTS OCCUR OUTSIDE OF HOSPITALS

Every year, thousands of Canadians die from cardiac arrest because they don't receive prompt medical attention. Eight out of ten cardiac arrests occur outside of a hospital setting. They may occur in a home or public place and CPR is only performed by a first responder in about 15% of cases. When cardiac arrest occurs, every second counts. For every minute that passes without CPR, the chance of survival decreases by approximately 10%.

WHAT IS CPR?

What we mean by resuscitation is the practice of CPR. But it is essential to contact emergency services, 9-1-1, a rapid dial that saves your life. CPR manually compresses the heart muscle and restores blood flow to the victim of cardiac arrest to keep them alive until help arrives.

CPR CAN QUADRUPLE SURVIVAL RATES

A landmark study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that CPR performed by first responders can almost quadruple survival rates. In addition, the quality of life of victims who survived a CPR is significantly better if first responders first administered CPR to them before help arrived. By manually circulating blood through the body, the rescuer reduces the risk of cell death. That's why it's important to be aware of CPR practices. Not only for others, but for you and your loved ones as well.

GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVE

This CPR training for the general public is designed to reduce mortality and morbidity related to cardiopulmonary arrest (CPR) through rapid and efficient intervention by the rescuer. The participant acquires the skills necessary to recognize cardiovascular emergencies, including cardiopulmonary arrest, and airway obstructions in adults, children and infants (Level C). This training enables the candidate to respond to these various emergencies. CPR training includes the use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Presentations via the interactive module of our web platform:

  • In order to explain the material, a series of interactive presentations have been prepared to focus and understand key concepts.

Required reading:

  • There is no required reading prior to the CPR General Public training. Specific bibliographies and readings from additional sources will be provided to help you assimilate the concepts related to the course.

Practical exercises:

  • Practical exercises, scenarios and simulations will allow you to apply the theoretical concepts of the course in specific contexts and to put you in a concrete situation of analysis and strategic reasoning.

COACHING

Throughout your CPR training, you can communicate with the Académie Saint-Bernard by email, phone or Facebook Messenger. However, the preferred method of communication is email (to ensure that all participants have access to the same information and to avoid duplication of responses from the Academy). Saint Bernard Academy reads all messages. Questions will not be answered instantly; you will receive a response within 48 business hours.

TEACHING APPROACH

Active resolution on alternative active CPR training theory, reflection, concrete and active scenarios and emergency medical simulation. CPR training also emphasizes an inductive teaching approach. Each lesson begins with an exercise or scenario for a candidate in a decision, management or action situation. This first part often raises questions that are then clarified in the second part of the training by a lesson. Theoretical notions of medical emergency management will be presented in each lesson. These lessons are inspired by the realities of the field, as encountered by the trainers of the Académie Saint-Bernard, who are all healthcare professionals.

The online CPR training sessions will be conducted in the following manner:

  • Presentations of the skill elements to be mastered;
  • Presentation via the interactive online module of the website;
  • Mannequin demonstration;
  • Evaluation questionnaires confirming mastery of the various theories;
  • Exercise and simulation to assimilate;
  • Simultaneous home practice and theoretical input.
  • Attendant CPR General Public Level C AED
